One killed, houses vandalized in post-polls violence

A Swechchha Sebak League leader was killed and several houses vandalized, in four districts of the country on Monday , a day after the third phase of the upazila polls.

In Pirojpur, a Swechchhasebak League leader was hacked to death in Mathbaria upazila of Pirojpur in election violence.

Victim Jony Talukdar, 25, was the vice president of No-8 Halta Gulishakhali Union Swechchhasebak League.

He was the son of Hatem Ali of Kabutarkhali village.

Mathbaria police OC MR Shawkat Hossain said rivals attacked Jony near a waterbody in Kabutarkhali at about 7:45am.

They hacked Jony with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured.

On information, police rescued Jony and rushed him to the upazila health complex.

He was later shifted to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital where he died at about 1pm, the OC said.

Meanwhile, a person has been detained in connection with the attack, he added.

Family members claimed Jony Talukdar was working for independent Upazila Parishad chairman candidate Riazuddin Ahmed running in the upazila elections scheduled to be held on March 31.

They also accused Awami League supporters for the killing.

But, upazila AL president and municipality mayor, Rafiquddin Ahmed Ferdous, denied the allegation.

In Jhenidah, a group of Awami League supporters allegedly vandalized seven houses of the Hindu community during post upazila polls violence in Tikari village of Sadar upazila.

Witnesses said supporters of Awami League candidate Abdur Rashid launched an attack and vandalized t houses of the Hindu community as they were supporters of independent candidate JM Rashid.

Officer-in-Charge of Sadar police station, Mizanur Rahman Khan, said additional forces were deployed in the area to fend off any unwanted incidents.

In Gazipur, supporters of Fahim Khondokar, Gazipur district unit Chhatra League ex-convener, vandalized the houses of Zahidul Alam Robin's people, BCL general secretary of the district.

The incidents took place in Maona, Mulaid, and Vangnahati on Monday  in Sreepur upazila.

Sreepur police station Sub-Inspector, Azharul Islam, said 30 people were held in connection with the vandalism.

In Gopalganj, supporters of Tungipara upazila defeated candidate, Babul Sheikh, blockaded the Gopalganj-Patgati road in the morning, protesting the upazila election results.

They protested by placing logs and burning tires at several points on the road.

Later, in a press briefing, Babul Sheikh, demanded a vote recount of the upazila polls.   

Earlier, the 3rd phase of elections in 117 upazila parishads across the country ended in the evening amid sporadic violence and allegations of vote rigging, and other irregularities.

The first phase and second phase of elections were held on March 10 and March 18 respectively, while the fourth phase of the polls are scheduled to be held on March 31.

The first upazila elections were held in 1985, and the next three were in 1990, 2009 and 2014.
