They surrounded the police station in protest of their fellow party members’ arrest
Local leaders and activists of the ruling party surrounded Debhata police station in Satkhira on Friday in protest of the arrest of seven of their fellow party members.
The arrestees are the followers of independent candidate for chairmanship of Debhata upazila parishad, SM Golam Mostafa, who is also the science and technology affairs secretary of Awami League’s Satkhira district unit, locals said.
Speaking to reporters, Golam Mostofa, who is running in the ongoing upazila election polls under the pineapple symbol, said: “Police arrested seven of my followers without any reason in the early hours of Friday.”
Among the arrestees are Robiul Islam, Shahidul Islam, Raihan, Monirul Islam, Abul Kashem and Raju Ahmed.
“Enraged by the meaningless and unjust arrest, the local Awami League leaders and activists surrounded the police station and staged a demonstration,” Mostofa said.
The Dhaka Tribune could not reach Debhata police station OC Biplob Kumar Saha for a comment, despite several attempts.
The third phase of the ongoing upazila parishad elections is due to take place on Sunday.
