Seven killed in Barisal road accident

Meanwhile, two other head-on collisions in Dhamrai and Bagerhat killed one and injured 35 respectively

Seven passengers of a motorized three-wheeler—including a child and two women—have been killed, and four others injured, in a road accident in Barisal.

The accident occurred on the Barisal-Banaripara road near the Tetultala area around 9:30am on Friday, as a bus collided head-on with a three-wheeler. 

The deceased are: BM College freshman Shila Haldar, 24, the driver Sohel Khan, 26, a house painter Manik Shikder, 40, a three-wheeler driver Khokon, 35, Meherunnesa, 50, housewife Parvin Akter, 35, and her son Tamim, 7. 

The four injured Abdullah Raihan, 8, Sumon, 26, Tonny, 17, Dulal Haldar, 31, are undergoing treatment at the Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH).

Barisal airport police station OC Abdur Rahman Mukur confirmed the matter and said that the bodies of the deceased are kept at the Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) morgue.

Barisal Fire Service and Civil Defence Station Officer Yunus Ali said: “As the three-wheeler was heading towards Barisal from Banaripara, it collided head-on with a Durjoy Paribahan bus in the Tetultala area – killing Shila on the spot.

“Police and fire service personnel arrived at the scene and rescued the injured victims. The doctor on duty declared Manik and Khokon dead on arrival.

“Sohel, Meherunnessa and Parvin died while undergoing treatment there, and Tamim died on the way to Dhaka for better treatment,” he added.

Police impounded the bus and the three-wheeler involved in the accident, but the bus driver and assistant managed to get away.

Police also said they will confirm the fitness and route permit of the vehicle and also verify the licence of the driver. 

Traffic on the road was suspended for around 30 minutes, but resumed after the fire service removed the damaged vehicles from the scene.

Another killed in Dhamrai accident

In Dhamrai, Dhaka, a motorized three-wheeler collided head-on with an oncoming truck, killing one and injuring the remaining two passengers. 

The collision took place on a local road in the Balia area of the Dhamrai upazila on Friday morning.

According to locals, the deceased – Adhir died on the spot and the other two were rescued to a nearby hospital.

Dhamrai Kawalipara police outpost Sub Inspector Kamruzzaman said: “The body of the deceased has been collected by his family members.”

However, the truck or its driver could not be apprehended, he added.

Another 35 injured in Bagerhat head-on collision

Another 35 were injured in a head-on collision between a bus and truck near the Shunai bridge area on the Mongla-Khulna Highway in Bagerhat.

The injured have been rescued to Khulna Medical Hospital and other local hospitals.

In an attempt to avert a tree log on the Highway, the bus collided head-on with an oncoming truck, on Friday around 8pm.

Rampal police station Sub Inspector said: “The incident critically injured 20-22 passengers, who are likely to succumb to their injuries.”
