Apparently both families hid the age of the girl on purpose
A primary school teacher has married an underage college student of Nalchity Degree College in Jhalakathi.
The incident took place at the Nalchity upazila’s Ferryghat area on March 7.
Sourav Das Shuvra, an assistant teacher of Bakerganj Upazila South-West Sialguni Government Primary School, married the 15-year-old in the presence of both family members at the girl’s Nalchity house, during a ceremony.
According to Hindu religion, the bride and groom are to stay at the bride’s house on the second day of the marriage, but as news of the child marriage spread, they were bound to leave Nalchity on March 8.
Apparently, both family members deliberately hid the girl’s age before the marriage.
According to locals, the girl’s father hurriedly arranged the marriage ceremony where guests including, teachers, politicians, public representatives, attended as guests.
The locals also claimed Dapdapia Union Degree College Principal Shapan Kumar Das, played the main role for the marriage that took place.
Nalchity Degree College acting Principal Md Rafikul Islam Kabir said: “According to the birth certificate, the student was born in December 2003 and is an underage girl.
Commenting on the matter, Nalchity UNO Md Ashraful Islam said: “A police team was sent at that time to stop the marriage, as we heard is was a child marriage. If the marriage still went through, then we will take legal action against the involved.”
The teacher, Saurav was contacted several times for his comments but was unreachable.
