A newborn has died after being found inside a trunk from a room of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall, at Jahangirnagar University (JU).
The baby died at Enam Medical College Hospital around 9:45pm on Saturday.
The JU student who gave birth to the child is currently under treatment at hospital and is in a stable condition, confirmed Hall Provost Prof Mujibur Rahman.
“The hall authority is looking after her treatment and her parents are also with her now,” Prof Mujibur said.
Students of the hall said the girl gave birth to the child Saturday afternoon. She gave birth on her own, but later her fellow peers realized what had happened and informed the hall authorities.
After she was taken to the hospital, employees of the hall heard the sound of crying from her room and later broke the trunk and found the baby.
A student of the hall said: “We did not know that she was pregnant and all her activities were normal.”
Meanwhile, a four member committee led by Assistant Resident Teacher of the Hall, Rabeya Khatun Tania, has been setup to investigate the matter. They were asked to submit a report within 10 days.
