The Election Commission (EC) instructed Cox's Bazar-1 (Chakaria-Pekua) constituency lawmaker, Zafar Alam, to leave the polling area because of violating the polls code of conduct.

EC Deputy Secretary, Mahfuza Akter, signed the paperwork on Sunday.

The information was confirmed by Chakaria upazila Election Officer, Shakhawat Hossain, also an assistant returning officer.

He said: “Zafar Alam was told to leave the area. We have instructions to keep him confined to his residence as well.

“We are going over to his house with police and Border Guards Bangladesh members to keep him restricted to his own house,” Shakhawat Hossain said, on a phone call with this reporter around 9pm Sunday.

Allegations of openly campaigning for candidates were brought against Zafar Alam. Such actions violate the polls code of conduct.

Independent candidate Fazlul Karim complained about the matter to EC and returning officers.
