New Zealand terror attack: A future wiped out by hate

Mozammel left Bangladesh four years ago, to pursue a higher education and provide a better future for his family

Update : 17 Mar 2019, 07:11 PM

Md Mozammel Haque Selim Miazi, 30, traversed oceans and travelled to New Zealand with the aim of becoming a doctor.

He had always wished to provide a better life for his family, who held high hopes for the youngest of three brothers. Unfortunately, their hopes were dashed when he was identified as one of the 50 victims of the terror attack in Christchurch, New Zealand on Friday, March 15.

Hospital authorities in New Zealand and the Bangladesh government have confirmed Mozammel’s death, and his mother Jamena Begum has taken the news particularly hard.

Mozammel is the youngest son of Jamena and the late Habibur Rahman. He flew to New Zealand to pursue a Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) degree, after completing his BSc in Dental Technology in Bangladesh four years ago.

Mozammel's older brother Md Shahadat Hossain Miazi said: "Mozammel's classmates informed me about his death on Friday. We had to take a loan of Tk20 lakh to send him to New Zealand four years ago.

"He always used to talk with our mother on Fridays. The last time he spoke to us was on Monday (March 11). He was supposed to come to Bangladesh next year, during Ramadan," he added.

Shahadat further said Mozammel had always promised to pay back the loan and ensure the family suffered no more, but the future looks bleak after his younger brother’s death.

"I urge the government to help us is this situation. We want their mercy," he added.

When contacted, Khadergaon Union Parishad Chairman Syed Manzur Hossain said: "Mozammel was injured during the terror attack. He was then taken to a local hospital in Christchurch, where he died while undergoing treatment.”

Matlab Dakshin Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shahidul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune they are aware of the situation Mozammel’s family is facing.

"We will talk with Mozammel's family to decide about what to do next," he said.
