Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has inaugurated the second Kanchpur Bridge across Shitalakkhya River to reduce traffic congestion on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway.

The premier opened the bridge through a videoconference from her official residence Ganabhaban on Saturday.

The four-lane Kanchpur Bridge is 397.3m long and 18.1m wide, at a construction cost Tk950 crore.

Japanese contractors Obayshi Corporation, Shimizu Corporation, JFE Engineer Corporation, and IHI Infra Systems Company Limited, started construction of the second Kanchpur Bridge along with the second Meghna, and second Meghna-Gumti bridges on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway on January 2016.

The construction work of second Kanchpur Bridge was completed nearly four months ahead of the June 2019 deadline.
