The second phase of the polls is slated be held on March 18
Three Awami League candidates have been contesting for the post of chairman in the Raninagar Upazila Parishad election in Naogaon.
The second phase of the polls is slated be held on Monday, March 18.
Naogaon Upazila Awami League's executive member Anwar Hossain received the party's nomination.
Meanwhile, its Joint General Secretary and District Awami League member Rezaul Islam is running using the pineapple symbol; and former leader of Upazila Awami League Anwar Hossain Helal is running using the motorcycle symbol, as independent candidates.
Voters believe that there will be fierce competition for votes among all three contenders.
Awami League-nominated candidate Anwar Hossain said: "I have been involved in Awami League's politics since I was a student.
"As per the demands of the general public and leaders, I was nominated by the party; they handed the symbol of development over to me."
He said: "I hope to be elected as the chairman in the upcoming election as people want to see someone with a clean image in this position."
Independent candidate Anwar Hossain Helal said: "My family has been the one to be by Awami League's side in their times of trouble, and one of my brothers gave his life serving Awami League. I have served this upazila for a long time.
"Now I am running for the post of chairman due to public demand; and I have already received a huge response from the people.
He further said: "I hope people of this upazila will elect me so that I can work on improving their living standards."
Another independent candidate, Rezaul Islam, said: "I have been working as a member of the Awami League following the ideals of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman; even my whole family in involved with the politics of the ruling party.
"I hoped to be nominated in the last general election, by the party, however the party did not think I was fit for the nomination. I was not nominated this time for the Upazila Parishad election either, which is why I decided to run as an independent candidate."
He believes that he will be elected if a fair and neutral election is conducted as general public will vote for him.
Upazila Awami League Acting President Abdul Bari Mollah said: The upazila Awami League is in favor of the boat symbol. It is not our concern who else is running for the polls as people of this upazila will definitely vote for the symbol of development; which is the boat logo."
