The doctor has been served a show cause notice

A video shot on a mobile phone, showing a Comilla General Hospital doctor sleeping on duty—while playing a classical romantic song on his computer—has gone viral on Facebook.

The video was uploaded with a caption saying: “Proshashoner drishty akorshon korchhi! Ei holo Comilla sadar haspataler chikitsha byabostha,” which translates to: “Seeking the attention of the administration! This is the current state of healthcare at Comilla General Hospital."

The caption furthers: “On Wednesday, I [the poster] took my mother to visit Dr Jahirul Haque in room 14 of the sadar hospital around 12pm. I found him sound asleep, with a romantic song playing on his computer. Medical students were busy gossiping and shooting selfies.

“Many patients were waiting outside of the room. The medical students told the patients to keep waiting, as the doctor was resting. I have never seen a doctor, while practicing at a private university, sleep for 30-35 minutes. Why don’t they sleep there? Is the smell of money preventing them from sleeping there?”

Responding to a query, Dr Jahirul Haque said: “I fell asleep, but I do not have a habit of neglecting my duties. Ward Master Nazrul Islam is behind the Facebook video. He previously attacked my office. I will file a general diary over the incident.”

Meanwhile, Ward Master Nazrul Islam said: “The doctor slept while on duty, and someone took a video of it and posted it on Facebook. I will never do anything against the hospital I work in. The allegation brought on by Dr Jahirul is not true.”

Comilla Civil Surgeon Dr Mujibur Rahman said: “We cannot allow the misdeed of one individual to tarnish the image of Comilla’s health department. A show cause notice has been served to Dr Jahirul because of the video.

“Further action will be taken after he responds to the show cause notice.”
