The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday

A garment worker has been shot to death by some unidentified assailants in Ashulia area of Savar.

The incident occurred at Bhuiyanpara in Gazirchat area around 1am on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Rasel Khan, 27, son of Fazlul Khan of Kutubpur village of Madaripur.

Rasel used to work in a local garment factory, and was living in a rented house in Bhuiyanpara area.

According to police and family of the victim, some youths snatched a mobile phone from a garment worker in the area a few days back that sparked outrage among other fellow workers living in the area.

On Friday night, two youths were again spotted suspiciously roaming around on the street. When Rasel, along with several other workers, tried to question the youths, an altercation broke out.

At one point, one of the youths, who had been concealing a firearm in his pocket, started shooting haphazardly, leaving Rasel wounded.

Bullet-riddled Rasel had been taken to a local hospital at first and then was transferred to Enam Medical College and Hospital in Savar. He died while undergoing treatment there on Saturday morning.

Confirming the matter, Ashulia police station Inspector Zabed Masud said: "Upon receiving information, police inspected the crime scene. The victim’s body will be sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital in Dhaka for autopsy."
