The ASIs allegedly abducted three young men and demanded Tk30 lakh as ransom

Two policemen have been withdrawn from duty in connection with an abduction and extortion plot in Gazipur.

The policemen are Kaliakair police station Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Abdullah Al Mamun, and Mirzapur police station ASI Mushfikur Rahman, confirmed Gazipur Additional Superintendent of Police in Gazipur Russel Sheikh, on Friday.

The police officers allegedly abducted three young men and then demanded Tk30 lakh in ransom. They also reportedly threatened to gun down the abducted trio, in crossfire, if the ransom was not paid.

The abducted men—Raihan Sarkar and Labib Hossain from Kaliakair upazila, and Nawshad Islam from Sreepur upazila—have been rescued. They youths are aged between 18 to 24 years.

According to the abductees and their family members, five men—Raihan, Labib, Nawshad, Toribullah, and Rakibul—were headed towards the Dhaka International Trade Fair around 5pm on Wednesday.

Kaliakair police station ASI Abdullah Al Mamun and Mirzapur police station ASI Mushfikur Rahman picked up Raihan, Labib, and Nawshad near the Sutrapur area, after their car stopped to refuel.

Toribullah and Rakibul were to a nearby tea-stall and were able to get away from the police.

The two ASIs reportedly demanded Tk30 lakh ransom from the trio as a condition for releasing them, and threatened to gun them down in crossfire if they did not pay.

The abductees claimed that they were able to negotiate the ransom to Tk10 lakh after much bargaining with the policemen.

Meanwhile, Toribullah and Rakibul informed their families about the matter, and then the Kaliakair police by mobile phone.

According to sources, Kaliakair police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Alamgir Hossain later informed Mirzapur police of the matter, and the incident came to the attention of senior police officials.

On Thursday afternoon, both ASIs involved in the incident were withdrawn from duty.

Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, ASIs Abdullah Al Mamun and Mushfikur Rahman blamed each other and firmly denied their involvement in the alleged extortion and abduction attempt.

Tangail Superintendent of Police Sanjit Kumar Roy and Gazipur Superintendent of Police Shamsunnahar stated that if evidence of abduction and extortion is found against the two ASIs, the department will act against them.
