Police have arrested Sohag, the prime suspect in the murder of a female college student, from Patuakhali.

The victim, Benazir Zahan Mukta, 19, was a first-year undergraduate student of Jhalakathi Government College, and allegedly had been in a romantic relationship with the suspect.

The teenage girl was stabbed to death outside her house in Nalchity Upazila on Monday.

Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, Kolapara police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Moniruzzaman said: “Sohag was arrested at his aunt’s home located in Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali on Friday.

“A joint team of the Nalchity and Kolapara police stations conducted the raid to arrest Sohag. Nalchity police station OC Abdul Hakim Talukder has taken the suspect into custody and left for Jhalakathi a while ago.”

According to police sources, Mukta left the house after receiving a phone call around 2:30pm. Family members rushed out of the house, after hearing her scream, and found her with critical stab injuries.

She died while being taken to a nearby hospital. Mukta’s father filed a case against Sohag and two-to-three unnamed people on Tuesday.

The victim’s mother, Taslima begum, and sister, Rifat Jahan, told the reporter that Mukta had been in a romantic relationship with Sohag, but she broke up with him a few days prior. Sohag called her on the day of her murder and asked her meet him.
