Workers on a ship, transporting fly ash across the Meghna river, noticed a fracture forming on the bottom of the vessel and anchored it near Chandpur Launch Terminal during the early hours of Thursday.

The vessel was headed towards Narayanganj. It set out from India on January 23. As soon as the workers noticed the fracture, they docked the ship at the nearest terminal.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority official Abdur Razzak said: “The vessel set out from India on January 23. Shortly after entering Chandpur, the ship workers noticed the fracture and docked at the Chandpur Launch Terminal.

“A primary inspection revealed that the bottom of the ship had cracked. The fire service arrived at the scene shortly after. Members of the Bangladesh River Police and Bangladesh Coast Guard were also present.”

The official continued that the vessel is being unloaded at the moment.
