Two journalists has been severely beaten and injured at Shahid Muktar Elahi Hall of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur.
On Tuesday, two student correspondents were beaten in Begum Rokeya University allegedly by Chhatra League student wing in the resident hall led by leader Mahmudul Hassan Joy.
The injured are Daily Sangbad Sangstha correspondent and Baroobi Journalists Association's treasurer Al Amin Hossain and Bangladesh Pratidin correspondent and Baroobi Journalists Association Joint Secretary Soumya Sarker.
Begum Rokeya University outpost in-charge SI Mahibul Islam confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
The two student journalists of the university were allotted rooms in Shahid Mukhtar Elahi in September last year. However, Chhatra League leader Mahmudul Hassan Joy has been occupying the seat for a long time with his activists.
The president of the Baroobi Journalist Association Saiful Islam on Tuesday went to meet with university unit Chhatra League President Tushar Kibria and Hall's President Hasan Ali in this regard. Tushar Kibria asked them to sit and show them the two rooms.
Later, as soon as they reached the rooms, Chhatra League leader Mahmudul Hassan Joy started the assaulting the journalists before initiating any conversation. Several other Chhatra League activists followed suit and beat them up.
Meanwhile, the condemnation of this incident has prompted the journalists' association leaders to demand legal action against the accused.
The journalists of Baroobi contacted the central Chhatra League President Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury and complained about the whole issue. When contacted, he said the matter was being viewed seriously.
