Headmaster bashes Hindu students for not eating beef
A high school principal has been accused of berating Hindu students at his school for protesting beef they were fed without their knowledge.
On Saturday, Falda Ramsundar Union High School took its students on a picnic to Gazipur. For lunch, they were served beef but were not told. There were 22 Hindu students among them, who later found out what had happened.
The Hindu students protested to Headmaster Jafar Iqbal, who dismissed their concerns and said eating beef one day would not damn them.
In Hindu religion, eating beef is taboo.
The students quoted the principal saying: “Why did you come if you do not eat beef?”
They had each paid Tk300 for the picnic to Gazipur.
When news of the beef broke, locals including other students and the parents of the Hindu students protested outside the school and closed it on Monday. The high school students have boycotted the classes while the principal remains unreachable.
Saran Dutta, president of the local Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council, condemned the whole affair for being insensitive towards religion.
The high school management committee president, Taherul Islam, said the local UNO, police officer-in-charge, and local residents will meet on Tuesday to discuss the issue and resolve it.
Upazila Secondary Education Officer Shahinul Islam said a headmaster cannot force their students to eat something. He also warned that if such a thing occurred, actions would be taken.
