5 suspects held over murder of couple in Syedpur

The husband and wife were murdered at their farm house in Balapara

Police have arrested five people in connection with the murder of a couple in Niplamari.

The suspects were arrested on Sunday afternoon, confirmed Syedpur Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ashok Kumar Paul.

The husband and wife were murdered at their farm house in Balapara union in the early hours of Sunday. During the attack, an employee of the farm, Abdul Razzak, was critically injured. He is now under treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

The arrestees are Alsam Hazi, 65, of the same area; his son, Labu, 40; Sajal, 30; maid Rahima, 35, and a neighbour, Rashidul Islam, 40.

Balapara Union Chairman Jewel Chowdhury said: “Nazrul Islam, 55, and his wife Salma Khatun, 45, had their throats slit.”

ASP Ashok, Syedpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahjahan Pasha, Rangpur Divisional Commissioner Md Jewel Bari, and Deputy Commissioner Nazia Shirin visited the murder scene on Sunday morning.

According to police and locals, the couple used to live at the farm house with one of their employees. Around 2am on Sunday, the assailants entered the house and killed them. When the employee tried to save them, he was also stabbed.

OC Shahjahan said: “An investigation is already going on. The bodies were sent to Nilphamari Sadar Modern Hospital for autopsies.”
