All but one crew member have been rescued alive, search operation is in progress
Two lighter vessels, carrying wheat and maize, capsized in the Bay of Bengal on Thursday.
The vessel carrying wheat, MV Khajababa Faridpuri, capsized around 11am near Bhasan Char in Swandip, Chittagong.
“The Dhaka-bound lighter vessel overturned due to strong currents, with 13 crew members on board. All but one crew member were rescued alive by nearby vessels," said Nabi Alam, general secretary of Lighter Vessel Workers' Union.
“Search for the missing crew member is currently in progress,” he added.
The other vessel, MV N Islam, which was carrying maize, capsized around 2:30pm near the same spot.
Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, Lt Com Saiful Islam, a Bangladesh Coast Guard official stationed in the area, said they had rescued all the 13 crew members.
"The vessel capsized after colliding with another lighter vessel," he added.
