A suspected yaba trader has been killed in a "gunfight" with BGB and the police.
Mostak Ahmed Prakash Muchhu, 35, was killed during a joint drive conducted by BGB and the police in the Jaliapara area ofTeknaf upazila around 5:30am on Sunday.
Three members of BGB and the police were hurt during the drive, claimed BGB. They also said they recovered 10,000 pieces of yaba and a firearm from the spot.
Commander of Teknaf 2 BGB Lt Col Md Asaduzzaman Chowdhury said: "On Saturday evening, a joint force of BGB and the police conducted an anti-drug drive in North Jaliapara area and detained Muchhu. After initial interrogation, the force took Muchhu with them to conduct a further drive in Jaliapara area.
"At one point, miscreants in that area fired at BGB-police and tried to take Muchhuaway," Asaduzzaman said. "Muchhu was shot in the ensuing gunfight."
Muchhu was taken initially to Teknaf Health Complex and later transferred to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctors declared him dead. His body has been kept in Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
Asaduzzaman added: "We recovered 10,000 pieces of yaba, a firearm and empty bullet shells from the spot."
However, he was unable to name the firearm and the three members of BGB-police who were injured in the gunfight.
Teknaf police station Officer-in-Charge Pradip Kumar Das could not be reached when contacted for further information.
