1 killed in Kushtia Awami League factional clash

Police have yet to determine the number of people injured in the incident

One man has been killed during a clash between two Awami League rival groups in Kushtia over asserting dominance in the area.

The incident occurred in west Abdalpur of sadar upazila on early Sunday.

The deceased- Moinuddin Biswas, 55, was the father of Islamic University. Kushtia, unit’s Chhatra League General Secretary Jewel Rana Halim.    

According to locals and police, Abdalpur union Awami League General Secretary Golam Mostafa led an attack on the residence of Abdalpur Union Parishad Chairman, Awami League leader Ali Haidar Swapan.

When Moinuddin- a supporter of Chairman Swapan- and his men resisted the attack, it led to a clash between the two groups, leading Moinuddin severely injured.

Later, he was send to Kushtia General Hospital, where the duty doctor declared him dead.

Kushtia Superintendent of Police SM Tanvir Arafat along with other senior police officials visited the site after the incident.

Kushtia Islamic University police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ratan Sheikh said: “I am still on the crime spot. A huge number of police officials have been deployed to bring the situation under control.”

However, the OC could not yet determine the number of people who were injured during the incident.
