Suspected drug peddler killed in Comilla ‘gunfight’

Police say the deceased was a notorious criminal and a listed narcotics dealer

A suspected drug peddler has been killed in a reported gunfight with a joint team of Detective Branch (DB) and local police personnel in Comilla. 

The deceased—Saiful Islam, 22—was killed in Monagram area, under Adarsha Sadar upazila, around 11:15pm on Wednesday night. He was a resident of Jora Meher village.

Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, district Detective Branch Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nasir Uddin Mridha said: “Acting on a tip-off that listed narcotics dealer Saiful, and his cohorts, were seen near the Monagram area, DB and Kotwali model police station personnel launched a raid.

“Upon seeing law enforcement, the culprits began firing at them, triggering a gunfight. Saiful received bullet injuries in the incident. He was taken to Comilla Medical College Hospital (CMCH), where the on-duty doctor declared him dead on arrival, around 12am.”

Meanwhile, Kotwali model police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abu Salam Mia who participated in the raid, said: “Saiful was a listed drug peddler and a notorious criminal. He was accused in five cases filed over illegal drugs and weapons.

“Three policemen were also injured during the raid, and they are presently undergoing treatment at the CMCH.”
