He said he has no connection to the banned militant outfit and does not welcome its support

Photojournalist Shahidul Alam has voiced his concern about a campaign, by Hizbut Tahrir, demanding his case be withdrawn.

“I have come to know via online news portals that posters demanding that the case against me be dropped, attributed to the militant and banned extremist organization Hizbut Tahrir, is currently being propagated allegedly with the help of Al Qaeda,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.

Shahidul also shared a news link published in Blitz, an English-language weekly tabloid (“Al Qaeda Man Held in Bangladesh while Coordinating Campaign in Favor of Photographer Shahidul Alam.” Blitz Exclusive, 15 Dec 2018. https://www.weeklyblitz.net/…/al-qaeda-man-held-in-banglad…/).

Blitz reported that police arrested a member of banned militant outfit Hizbut Tahrir—which has connections to Al Qaeda—on December 15; while the member was coordinating a campaign for Shahidul.

The noted photographer was picked up from his Dhanmondi residence on August 5 and later, a case was filed against him under the ICT Act. He was released on November 20.

He said he heard that two posters, attributed to Hizbut Tahrir, were posted on walls on Road 7 in Gulshan, Dhaka.

“I have absolutely no connection with either Hizbut Tahrir or Al Qaeda in any form. I have had no previous dealings with these two organizations, nor do I welcome their support,” said Shahidul.

He said: “By linking me with the banned organization Hizbut Tahrir, an attempt is being made to implicate me in their subversive and illegal activities. Such acts undermine me in a personal, professional, and socio-cultural capacity.

“I also fear that such linkage with subversive and illegal activities will be damaging and could be potentially life-threatening.”

Shahidul said he filed a general diary with Dhanmondi police station on December 23 as he felt insecure. “The police informed me that they would forward my application to the Cyber Crime Unit for investigation.”

“I feel that necessary legal steps by the relevant law enforcement agencies and an immediate investigation are urgently needed,” said the photographer.
