The workers launched the demonstration protesting reported unfair wages
Workers from five readymade garment (RMG) factories have held a demonstration on a highway in Savar, protesting the alleged inequality of a newly-introduced salary structure.
Workers of three factories owned by the Standard Group, one by Birds Group, and one by another company, demonstrated on Thursday morning.
Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, several workers—including Sultana Begum and Rafiq—said there is inequality in the newly-introduced salary structure.
To protest the issue, RMG workers held a demonstration on the Hemayetpur-Singair Highway. Industrial police later arrived on the scene to prevent untoward incidents.
The situation was contained after the factories declared the day a holiday, dispersing the protesting workers.
Responding to query, Sana Saminur Rahman, superintendent of industrial police in Savar said: “RMG workers from five factories in Hemayetpur took to the streets protesting their salary structure.
“Industrial police was dispatched to remove the workers from the highway. Additional police have been deployed in the area to prevent further unrest.”
