Two people have been killed in a gunfight between alleged drug peddlers and criminals in Damurhuda upazila of Chuadanga district.
The deceased are Jhantu, 40, a resident of Charulia village, and Dhulo, 43, hailing from Ishwarchandrapur village.
Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune on Friday, Damurhuda Model police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sukumar Biswas said: “After receiving information that two gangs are engaged in a gunfight in a field near Gobindahuda village, law enforcers conducted a raid in the area around 1am.
“The bullet riddled bodies of listed drug peddler Jhantu and criminal Dhulo were found at the scene. Later, police sent the bodies to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital.”
According to local police, Jhantu is listed as a notorious drug peddler by the Home Ministry, and was accused in 11 cases. On the other hand, Dhulo was an infamous extremist, accused in more than twelve cases, including six for murder.
Police also seized two locally made guns, two bullets, four bombs, cleavers, and three sacks of phensedyl from the spot, said the OC.
Meanwhile, Assistant Superintendent of Police Abu Russell said the Jhantu and Dhulo were killed in a gunfight triggered by a dispute over controlling the illegal narcotics trade in the region.
