The deceased, Selim, was ‘struck by a bullet while attempting to flee’ following his arrest, interrogation, and participation in a police raid

A suspected robber has been killed in a reported gunfight with Detective Branch (DB) of police in Jessore Sadar upazila.

The incident took place in the Dogachhia village of the upazila around 3:30am on Tuesday.

The deceased is Selim, 40 – son of the late Jalal Uddin – from Raipara area. He was wanted in a dozen cases including for robbery.

Law enforcement claimed the "gunfight" took place when they conducted a raid to recover illegal arms from Selim's possession—after arresting him.

Police recovered a gun and a round of bullets from the site.

DB police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Soumen Das told the Dhaka Tribune: "Selim was arrested at his rented residence in Gobindapur area of sadar upazila. During interrogation, he confessed to being involved with robbery and possessing arms."

The OC said, based on information, police conducted a raid in the Dogachhia area—taking Selim along with them.  Upon seeing law enforcement, Selim's associates opened fire at them forcing the police to retaliate and triggering the gunfight.

At one point, Selim was struck by a bullet when he tried to flee. He was taken to Jessore General Hospital where the on-duty doctors declared him dead.

Dr Tarek Mohammad Shams of the hospital's Emergency unit said: "Police brought in a body with bullet wounds around 3:45am; however the person had died on the way to the hospital."

The OC also said police are preparing a case regarding the incident.
