10 killed in road crashes across country

The accidents took place in Natore, Kushtia, Chittagong, Panchagarh, Bagerhat and Feni

At least ten people were killed and many others injured in separate accidents on roads across the country on Sunday.

In Natore, two people were killed and 30 others including 20 students were injured following a head-on collision between a bus and a truck on Natore-Pabna Highway in the Gunai Hati area of the Boraigram upazila.

The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

The accident took place around 9:45 am when the bus carrying a group of students of Bonpara Degree College and Bonpara Mahila Degree College collided with the cement-laden truck, leaving truck driver and an unidentified bus passenger dead on the spot, said Abdul Halim, officer-in-charge of Bonpara police station.

In Chittagong, Primary Education Completion (PEC) examinee Esha Akhter, 12, and female garment worker Meherun Akhter, 26, were killed in separate road accidents in the Patia upazila and Bandar area of the port city in the morning.

Sub-Inspector Alauddin Talukder of the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) outpost said a bus hit Esha Akhter, daughter of Dedarul Islam of the Bininihara area, while she was waiting for a vehicle in front of Chilashah Market in the Patia upazila around 9 am to go to her exam centre, leaving her critically injured.

Meanwhile, Meherun Akhter was killed as a bus hit her in the Majhirpara area around 7:15 am while she was going to her workplace, said Jahirul Haque, in-charge of CMCH Police Outpost.

In Kushtia, three people including a police official were killed and 25 others injured in separate road accidents in the Khoksa and Mirpur upazilas in the morning. 

A B M Mehedi Masud, officer-in-charge of the Khoksa police station, said two bus passengers Mahatab Uddin, 50, and Abdul Kader, 65, were killed and 25 others injured as the bus plunged into a roadside ditch on the Kushtia-Rajbari Highway in the Mirzapur area after the driver lost his control over the steering.

Meanwhile, Sub-Inspector Masud Hossain, 50, son of Mosharraf Hossain of the Purba Majampur area in the district, was killed as a bus hit his motorcycle in the Bottoil area of the Mirpur upazila around 9 am.

In Panchagarh, a youth - Robiul, 24, was killed when a microbus hit his motorcycle on the Panchagarh-Bangladanda Highway in the Tetulia upazila in the afternoon.

Tetulia police station Officer-in-Charge Zahurul Islam confirmed the incident.

In Bagerhat, a Power Development Board official was killed when a three wheeler hit his motorcycle in the Battala area of the Fakirhat upazila in the district at noon.

The deceased was identified as Liton Sheikh, 42, son of Tota Mian of the Sheikhpara area in the Khulna district, said SI Khaled Hasan of the Katakhali Highway police station.

In Feni, a youth identified as Ebu, 25, was killed when a truck hit his bicycle on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in the afternoon.

Dhaka-Chittagong Highway police outpost Officer-in-Charge Abdul Awal confirmed the incident.
