1 killed in Gazipur as RMG workers clash over death rumour

RMG workers go berserk over death rumour of fellow worker in Gazipur. Fifty factories have declared holiday

One Ansar man has been killed and three people injured as garments workers of Mitali Fashion Limited and other factories clashed over rumours of the death of a fellow worker because of alleged theft in Konabari of Gazipur.

Emdad Hossain, officer-in-charge of Konabari police station confirmed the news on Thursday.

The deceased Ansar was identified as Bhoirab Chandra Saker, 35, son of Tapan Kumar of Goalbari area of Gaibandha district.

Mahedi Hasan, a worker of Mitali Fashion Limited was beaten over theft charges on Wednesday and his co-workers staged demonstrations on Wednesday evening protesting the incident.

On Thursday morning, when a rumour spread about Mahedi's death at a hospital, the workers of several factories got furious. They gathered in front of their factories and hurled brick chips tat Mitali Fashion Ltd and other adjacent factories.

Kashimpur police station OC Akbar Ali Khan, and Industrial Police Inspector Selim Reza, said some employees of the factory beat Mahedi for allegedly stealing some clothes from the factory; the worker was admitted to hospital and later released after receiving treatment.

On the following day, some workers spread rumours that Mahedi had died and started agitating. Seeing them, workers from other factories joined and the situation spun out of control.

At one point, the workers vandalized several factories and beat up Ansar members of Delta Spinning Mills, resulting in the death of one, while three people were injured also.  

The agitated workers also vandalized gates and windows of Jamuna Garments, Tusuka, and Keya Spinning factories.

Later, police brought the situation under control.
