Five others, undergoing treatment at RMCH, are in critical condition
The death toll in Friday’s road crash in Panchagarh has increased to 10.
The accident took place around 7:45pm on the Panchagarh-Tetulia Highway in the Sadar upazila, said Panchagarh Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Golam Azam.
The deceased are – Lovely Begum, 29, her son Yasin Ali, 7, Anittyo, 20, Faridul Islam, 30, Rezaul, 22, Russel, 20, Yunus Ali, 28, Mozammel, 38, Monir, 6 and Rahela, 25.
Witnesses said a Tetulia-bound minibus, carrying a wedding party, collided head-on with a truck carrying electric line polls, killing five people on the spot.
Two fire service units, local police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members went to the spot to conduct rescue operations with the help of locals.
The injured were taken to Panchagarh Sadar Hospital, where three more people, including a woman and a child, died. Two other victims died while being taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) for better treatment.
Five of the surviving victims are in critical condition and undergoing treatment at the RMCH.
Panchagarh police station Officer-in-Charge Akkas Ali told the Dhaka Tribune: “The truck involved in the accident has been seized, but the driver is on the run. We are preparing to file a case.”
ADC Azam said a five-member committee has been formed to investigate the road accident. The committee has been asked to submit its report within the next three days.
Panchagarh Deputy Commissioner Sabina Yasmin said the administration has provided Tk20,000 to each of the family of the deceased.
