Five Jubo League leaders were arrested for attacking and vandalizing, around 10pm on Thursday, a cultural program at the sadar temple of the Dhunot upazila to celebrate the Hindu festival of Durga Puja in Bogra.

A total of seven named and five unnamed suspects, including Dhunot municipality unit Jubo League’s organizing secretary Mehedi Hasan, were implicated in the case filed by Dhunot Sub-Inspector (SI) Shafiqul Islam.

The five arrestees are Touhidul Alam Palash, 25, Abu Raihan Tutul, 26, Kamal Hossain Ripon, 25, Parvez, 23, and Palash Mia, 24.

According to case files and local sources, a cultural program to celebrate Puja was being held at the Dhunot sadar temple on Thursday night. During a female dance performance, some drunken Jubo League members began harassing the women at the venue.

When the organizing body of the event stopped them, a scuffle ensued, accompanied by an exchange of slurs. After some time, the Jubo League leaders left.

However, the unruly group came back to the venue shortly, this time on motorcycles, and began vandalizing chairs. When the organizing body, which included former Chhatra League leader Rony Kumar Saha, tried to stop them, they were beaten up by the thugs.

Aided by people attendees and organizers, police arrested Jubo League leaders Touhidul Alam Palash and Abu Raihan Tutul. After a case was lodged in this regard on Friday, police also arrested Ripon Mia, Palash Mia, and Parvez.

Police confiscated three motorcycles belonging to the miscreants.

However, Touhidul denied the charges, saying: “Someone threw a chair from behind us while we were listening to music at the Puja Mandap, causing some unrest. No Jubo League member was involved in the incident.”

Dhunot police station Officer-in-Charge Khan Md Erfan said: “Five of the twelve suspects have been arrested, and we are trying to find the others.”
