Policeman shot in Madaripur clash centring death of UP member

Member of Ward 9 under Bashgari Union, Khabir Mridha was killed during a scuffle between opposing political factions in an earlier clash

A policeman was injured during a clash in Bhaduri Village of Madaripur on Thursday night, centring the death of a UP member in an earlier incident. 

 “A policeman named Rayan shot his own foot while firing his gun,” confirmed Madaripur Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Md Badrul Alam Molla.

Member of Ward 9 under Bashgari Union, Khabir Mridha was killed during a scuffle between opposing political factions the same day.

Locals told the Dhaka Tribune, Bashgari UP Chairman Mostafizur Rahman Sumon has a long standing dispute with Ward 5 member Akhter Shikder over establishing dominance. 

Supporters of both the chairman and the member engaged in a clash on Thursday afternoon. There are reports that at least 50 crude bombs exploded during the clash, leaving Ward 9 member Kabir Mridha dead on the spot, and 15 others injured.

The death of Kabir in the clash between the supporters of the UP chairman and the member resulted in another scuffle between locals and law enforcers.

According to police sources, locals engaged in a violent clash with the law enforcers the same night.

Police fired hundreds of rounds to bring the situation under control, where a policeman was also injured. A tensed situation is prevailing in the area due to heavy police presence.

According to police, a case will be filed over the death of Kabir Mridha. The deceased UP member was buried at his own home on Friday.
