Law enforcement officials arrested six suspected members of banned Islamist militant outfit, Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), in Jhenaidah and Joypurhat districts.
In Jhenaidah, police arrested three JMB members, including a woman, from a hotel in Jhenaidah town on Wednesday night.
The arrested are Abu Sayed Ansary, 23, of Tetulia upazila in Panchgarh district, Urmi Khatun, 21, daughter of Sheikh Abdus Salam of Bahtoi village in Shoilkupa upazila, and Habibur Rahman, 25, son of Somej Uddin of Taminnagar village in Jhenaidah.
Jhenaidah Superintendent Hasanuzzaman said Sayed and Urmi became friends on Facebook a few years ago.
Later, they lived together and got involved with several militant attacks in the country.
After being produced before the court, they were sent to jail.
Police recovered two firearms and some Jihadi books from the spot.
In Joypurhat, police arrested three JMB men from Matirgarh area of Khetlal upazila in the district on Thursday.
The arrested are Nur-e Alam alias Prince, 28, Azizar Rahman, 52, and Nur Mohammad, 32, son of Sarafat Ali from the Matirgarh area.
Khetlal Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shariar Khan said that on a tip, police conducted a drive in the area and arrested the three militants while they were busy in a secret meeting.
He said the criminals tried to reorganize themselves ahead of the national polls to create unrest.
A case was filed in this connection.
