At least seven people have been killed and several others injured in separate road accidents around the country.
The incidents took place in Chittagong and Kushtia districts on Tuesday.
In Chittagong, five people were killed and two others injured when a speeding truck ploughed through a crowd at an auto-rickshaw stand in Thakurdighi area of Mirsarai upazila around 6:30am.
The deceased were identified as auto-rickshaw drivers Shah Alam, 40, Didarul Alam, 35, Kamrul, 45, Mosharaf, 26, and passenger Mohiuddin, 60.
Fire Service and Civil Defence’s Kumira unit station officer Shamsul Alam said four people had died on the spot after the coal-laden Dhaka-bound truck hit the crowd at the stand.
One of the injured also died on his way to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, said Jorarganj highway police outpost Sub-Inspector Sohel Sarker.
He said the truck driver had lost control of his vehicle as he dozed off. The two other injured were admitted to Mirsarai Upazila Health Complex.
Locals had caught the truck driver and handed him over to Jorarganj police.
In Kushtia, two persons were killed in separate road accidents in the morning.
One of the deceased was identified as Sumaiya, 6, daughter of Asanur Rahman in Modhupur area, and the other, an assistant of a three-wheeler’s driver, was yet to be identified.
Islamic University police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ratan Sheikh said that Sumaiya died on the spot after being run over by a motorcycle in the area.
Meanwhile, Bheramara police OC Aminul Islam said the unidentified driver’s assistant of a three wheeler was severely injured when the vehicle lost control and skidded off in the town’s Bheramara intersection.
He died while being rushed to the hospital.
The OC said the driver managed to flee the scene right after the incident.
