CU teacher jailed over derogatory comment on PM

Maidul Islam was sued under the ICT Act in July

A Chittagong court has ordered to send a teacher of Chittagong University (CU) to jail on charge of defaming Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Facebook.

Chittagong District court and session Judge Md Ismail Hossain passed the order after rejecting his bail request on Monday.

Chhatra League’s CU unit's former executive member Md Ifterkhar Uddin Ayaz filed a case against Sociology Department's Assistant Professor Maidul Islam under Section 57 of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) with the Hathazari police on July 23.

Bulon Lal Bhowmick, counsel of the defendant told the Dhaka Tribune that the accused teacher had secured interim bail for a period of eight weeks from the High Court.

"Complying with the High Court order, the teacher surrendered to the lower court on Monday and requested for bail. However, the court rejected the bail petition and orderedthat he be sent to jail," said the counsel.
