A gang of assailants have gunned down Jolla Union Parishad Chairman Bishwajit Halder Nantu in Barisal.

Nantu, also local Awami League unit president, was shot dead in Karfa Bazar around 9pm on Friday.

Sources said a gang of assailants, riding on motorcycles, shot the 40-year-old UP chairman was at his clothes shop in the local market and escape the scene. 

Locals initially took Nantu to a local health complex, and later shifted him to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, where the duty doctor declared him dead.

Confirming the matter, Hospital Director Md Bakir Hossain said: “Three bullet wounds were found on Nantu’s body.”

During the attack on the local UP chairman, another man named Nihan Halder, 35, was also shot. He is undergoing treatment at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.

Wazirpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shishir Kumar Pal told the Dhaka Tribune law enforcers are trying to track down the assailants.

Echoing the same statement, Barisal District Superintendent of Police Md Saiful Islam said police have been given strict instructions to bring the attackers to justice.
