The teenage girl filed a case against four people under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act on July 19 this year

Police have rescued family members of a rape case victim, after they were allegedly detained and tortured for hours by the relatives of the accused, in the Rasti Village under the Madaripur sadar upazila on Thursday.

Family members of the victim, and police sources told the Dhaka Tribune on Friday, a teenage girl had complained against a local youth named Sabbir, alleging that she was raped multiple times over promise of marriage.

Sabbir did not fulfill his promise, and delayed marrying the victim for two years.

The teenage girl filed a case against Sabbir and three others under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, with the sadar model police station on July 19 this year.

Following media coverage of this matter, the accused married the victim, but his family members later refused to accept the girl into the family. As a result, the victim did not withdraw the case she filed against Sabbir and three others.

Two months after the case was filed, police arrested Sabbir.

Following Sabbir’s arrest, his relatives reportedly began threatening the victim and his family members with a demand to withdraw the case, the victim and her relatives told the correspondent.

According to sources, Sabbir’s relatives detained the victim’s uncle Barek Morol and his family members in a brick kiln in the area and tortured them for hours on Thursday. On a tip off, police arrived at the scene and rescued the girl’s relatives.

Barek Morol and his family members have gone into hiding following the incident.

Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, the teenage victim said: “After Sabbir got me pregnant nine months ago, I have been living in my brother-in-law’s home. My brother-in-law has been threatened numerous times since Sabbir got arrested.

“I just want safety for me and my unborn child.”

Meanwhile, the Sabbir’s father Motleb Sardar said: “I have accepted the marriage, then why was my son arrested? We did not torture anyone.

“I heard that some members of a local club detained the girl’s relatives. But I know nothing about this incident.”

On the other hand, Madaripur sadar police station Sub-Inspector Biltu Das told the correspondent: “A local youth named Sabbir was arrested in a rape case on September 7. I cannot confirm if the victim’s relatives were tortured.”

“However, I heard that a scuffle broke out during a village arbitration which was being held in the area. We went there to bring the situation under control, and helped the girl’s family members leave the area.”

Commenting on the incident, Madaripur Superintendent of Police said: “If such an incident had occurred in the Rasti village, we will take necessary steps against the perpetrators once a case is filed by the victims.”
