Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity Secretary General Mozammel Haque Chowdhury has been released from Dhaka Central Jail.
Mozammel was released around 8:40 pm on Thursday. His wife and relatives were present at the time of his release.
Jailer of Dhaka Central Jail Mahbubul Islam has confirmed the news.
A Dhaka court on Thursday rejected police’s pleas to show the Jatri Kalyan Samity secretary general as arrested in a case filed under the Explosive Substances Act and place him in remand.
Instead, Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mazhraul Islam granted Mozammel bail in the afternoon, following a hearing on the bail petition filed earlier in the day by his lawyer Jyotirmoy Barua.
The explosives case was filed at the capital’s Kafrul police station in February. Police showed him as arrested in the case on September 10 and pleaded to the court to take him into remand.
Jyotirmoy said: “After securing bail in the second case, Mozammel’s release from police custody is now just a matter of time.”
On Tuesday, Mozammel also secured bail in an extortion case, which was filed at Mirpur model police station by a man named Dulal, who reportedly works in the transport sector, on September 4.
Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity has been demanding his release since police arrested him for the extortion case from his Sanarpar house in Narayanganj September 6.
Later that day, another Dhaka court placed him on one-day remand.
According to details of the case, Mozammel allegedly demanded Tk2 lakh as extortion from Dulal. Dulal reportedly gave him Tk1, 000.
However, when contacted, the plaintiff told various media outlets that he did not know Mozammel personally, and claimed that he only signed a piece of paper that was brought to him by two labour leaders.
