Rabiul was a drug abuser and had four cases filed under the Narcotics Control Act
Dewanganj police recovered the dead body of Rabiul Islam Apel, 25, an auto-rickshaw driver from a branch of Brahmaputra river in Dwanganj, Jamalpur on Monday morning.
The police said Rabiul ran and jumped into the river to escape the police when he was stopped at a check post on Sunday night.
Jamalpur police Superintendent Md Bachir Uddin told Dhaka Tribune: “Rabiul Islam left his auto-rickshaw and ran away that night, when the Dewanganj police asked him to stop to check his vehicle.”
Officer-in-charge of Dewanganj police station Lutfar Rahman said that Rabiul was a drug abuser and had four cases filed under the Narcotics Control Act.
After Rabiul’s disappearance, a diver’s team recovered his dead body on Monday morning.
On the other hand locals alleged that Rabiul was taken in custody from the municipal area under the authority of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mosharraf and Sub-Inspector (SI) Masud of Dewanganj Police Station around 8:30pm on Sunday.
Rabiul’s father, Tunu from Dalbari village along with the locals said the police acted out the whole incident after they tortured and killed Rabiul for not giving the demanded sum of money.
The locals surrounded Dewanganj police station and vandalized several shops claiming that the police dropped his body in the river.
However, the police denied this accusation.
