A gang of miscreants attacked a Christian house in the Gilapol village in the Sharsha upazila in Jessore on Saturday night.
Police on Sunday (Sunday) arrested eight people in a case filed over carrying outthe attack, looting and vandalism.
A gang of miscreants, namely, Milon Bahini demanded extortion money from Jasib Juran Das, said Ulashi Union Parishad Chairman Aynal Haque.
Police and locals said, Union Parishad member Tariqul Islam Milon was demanding extortion from the Christian family for a long time.
On Saturday night, Solmon Das (50), son of Jasib Juran Das was involved in a heated argument with Union Parishad member Tariqul Islam Milon in the market. At one stage, the Tariqul hit Solomonon the head with the torch in his hand. Then the supporters of Milon attacked the house of Jasib Juran Das.
Members of the gang, carrying sharp weapons, attacked Solomon's house and vandalized all the furniture; and looted large amount of cash, gold jewellery, and cell phones as he failed to provide extortion money. They also molested the female members of the family in the process.
The members of Milon Bahini also threatened the family not to inform law enforcers regarding the attack.
Tariqul Islam Milon, the main accused in the case, told journalists about the incident in front of the Sharsha police station in the morning, but the police did not arrest him, the complainant said.
Later on Sunday morning, a case was filed accusing 17 people with the Sharshapolice station, said officer-in-charge M Moshiar Rahman.
