Akifa was critically injured in an accident on August 28. She died two days later

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested the owner of Faisal Ganjeraaj Paribahan bus that was involved in an accident that led to the death of one-year-old Akifa Khatun.

Joynal Abedin, 63, was arrested from his house in Faridpur’s Jhiltuli area around 5:30am on Sunday.

Faridpur Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Md.Rois Uddin told the Dhaka Tribune: “Acting on a tip-off,a team of RAB 8 conducted a drive in the Jhiltuliarea and arrested Joynal.”

Joynalis an accused in case filed with Kushtia Sadar police station over the bus accident that led to Akifa’s death.

On the morning of August 28, Akifa’s mother Rina Begum was walking down the road carrying the infant in front of a stationary bus named Ganjeraaj near Chourhash intersection of Kushtia.

Akifa was knocked from her mother’s arms when the bus hit them. The incident was caught on a CCTV camera installed in a nearby jewelry shop.

The mother and the child were initially admitted to Kushtia General Hospital, but Akifa was shifted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) after her condition deteriorated.

The infant died on August 30, following two days of treatment at DMCH. She was buried at the Chourhash Graveyard after her funeral in Kushtia the same day.
