The only passenger on board was raped on Friday
The supervisor of a bus where a disabled girl was gang-raped on Friday, in Tangail, has been arrested.
Police on early hours of Monday arrested one of the accused Md Ershad, 40, from Benukurshia area of Kalihati upazila. He is the son of Late Lal Chan of the same area.
Ershad was sent to court for a five day remand on Monday morning. Bangabandhu Bridge East police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mosharraf Hossain has confirmed the news to the Dhaka Tribune.
The OC said: “Acting on a tip-off, police arrested Ershad from his house. The bus driver Alam is still in hiding, police are working on arresting him soon.”
Earlier on Friday, the bus was leaving Tangail for the Bangabandhu Bridge East bus stand, at 12:30am. As it was late, there were no passengers on board except the victim. Taking advantage of the situation, the driver, supervisor, and driver’s assistant raped her.
After hearing the victim’s screams, police patrolling the highway followed the bus to Bangabandhu Bridge and captured the driver’s assistant Nazmul. However, the Alam and Ershad managed to flee the scene.
The OC added that they suspect the woman may be mentally disabled, as she could not provide her name or address when asked. She was later sent to Tangail General Hospital.
Nazmul made a confessional statement to a Tangail court on Friday afternoon. A case has been filed against the bus driver, driver’s assistant, and supervisor over the incident.
