RAB apprehended them during routine patrols of the Dhaka-Sylhet highway on Sunday
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested six suspected smugglers with gold worth Tk6 crore.
They were arrested from a bus in Pachdona area, in Narisingdi, Sunday evening.
Those arrested are: Jamal Hossain, 22; Tanvir Ahmmed, 25; Raju Hossain, 23; Abul Hasan, 35; Raju Ahmmed, 30 and Alauddin, 32.
RAB 3 Acting Commanding Officer Maj Rahat Harun Khan, confirming the matter on Monday morning, during a press briefing at RAB’s Karwan Bazar media centre, said that a team of RAB 3 had been stationed at a check post on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway, in the Narisingdi's Pachdona area, on Sunday around 4:30pm.
During a routine search, RAB stopped an Ena Paribahan bus and searched the passengers. Three people were then apprehended with 60 gold bars, he added.
He also said on the basis of their information they stopped a Green Line Paribahan bus in the same area around 5:30pm, and arrested three more with 60 gold bars.
A total of 14kg of gold have been recovered, which has a market value of around Tk6 crore, he added.
Maj Rahat said the culprits had been smuggling the gold and sending it to neighbouring countries for quite some time, adding that the process of taking legal action against them is underway.
He added that efforts to arrest the ring leader are ongoing.
