An indefinite transport strike has been called by the Sunamganj unit of Road Transport Owners-Workers Unity Council on six routes from the district, after an angry mob torched a minibus following the death of a man in a road accident.

As a result of this strike, many passengers are facing a great deal of suffering as neither buses nor human haulers are providing their services. However, easy-bikes are still available, albeit for short distances only.

On Thursday, a local electrician and BNP activist called Rahel Miya was crushed by a Sylhet-bound minibus in South Sunamganj upazila. Following the incident, an angry mob torched a minibus not involved with the above mentioned road accident.

After no one was arrested in this regard, the local unit of Road Transport Owners-Workers Unity Council called for an indefinite transport strike.

Sunamganj Transport Workers’ Union President Md Shujaul Kabir told the correspondent: “We have called this strike as no one was punished for torching the bus. The strike will continue until the demands of the transport owners and workers are met.”
