Police sources added that they suspect the woman may have a mental disability
A woman who was raped on a bus in Tangail has been sent to the Government Shelter Center in Pubail, Gazipur on Saturday afternoon.
She was sent to the centre after Tangail Senior Judicial Magistrate Ashikuzzaman granted an appeal by the police in this regard.
Bangabandhu Bridge East police station SI Kabirul Haque, investigation officer of the case, said the victim could not disclose any information other than her name and that she lived in Kushtia.
Police sources added that they suspect the woman may have a mental disability.
The woman was travelling to the Bangabandhu Bridge East Thana bus stand at around 12:30 am on Friday. However, when she tried to disembark, bus driver Alam Mia and helper Nazmul Hossain did not allow her to leave. The helper stood guard at the door, while the driver raped the woman.
After hearing the screams of the victim, police patrolling the highway came to the location captured the helper. However, the driver managed to flee the scene.
Nazmul made a confessional statement to a Tangail court on Friday afternoon. Bus driver Alam is still absconding.
Meanwhile, the medical examination of the victim has been completed. Tangail General Hospital Gyani Department Dr Farida Yasmin conducted the medical examination, and the report is still pending.
Tangail One Stop Crisis Center Program Officer Bayazid said the victim is emotionally unstable.
“The victim informed us that her house is in Kuripur village of Mirpur Upazila in Kushtia. We will provide her with legal assistance,” he added.
Tangail Police Superintendent Sanjit Kumar Roy said all legal procedures have been completed as per the court order. “As soon as the medical report is completed, the actual facts will be revealed.”
Bangabandhu Bridge East Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mosharraf Hossain said efforts to arrest the bus driver are underway.
