RARS officer Billal Hossain Gani and local businessman Rafikul Islam Swapan Biswas, are still missing
Three bodies have been recovered by divers and Fire Service, after a boat capsized in Chalan Beel under Pabna’s Chatmohar upazila.
On Saturday, the body of Ishurdi Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS) officer Billal Hossain Gani’s wife Momtaz Parveen Shiuly, columnist Mosharraf Hossain Musa’s wife Shahnaz Parveen, and Ishurdi native Rafikul Islam’s daughter Sadia were recovered around 1:10am, 11am, and 1:15pm respectively, confirmed Md Nurunnabi, leader of the team of divers from Rajshahi conducting the rescue operation.
Two others, RARS officer Billal Hossain Gani and local businessman Rafikul Islam Swapan Biswas, are still missing.
The boat capsized around 7pm Friday, after a crack developed at the bottom of the craft.
A team of divers from Rajshahi reached the spot at 11pm, and began rescue operations at around 11:50. Chatmohar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sarkar Ashim Kumar and Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (Chatmohar Circle) Tapas Kumar Paul also rushed to the spot to assist in the search and rescue operation.
Shumon Hossain, a young man who rescued 17 of the 22 people on board, said: “The crack opened when some of the people climbed onto the makeshift roof of the boat to take a selfie, causing it to collapse. I was in a boat behind theirs, and I immediately jumped into the water to help.”
