The local administration has imposed Section 144 in Gopalpur Upazila toprevent imminent clashes

Section 144 was imposed after Gopalpur Upazila Parishad Chairman Yunus Islam Talukder announced a public rally at the Nilin Moin Uddin High School grounds on Thursday.

Local MP Khandaker Asaduzzaman’s son Mushiuzzam Rumel had also called for a public gathering  at the same high school grounds. He wanted to arrange a protest rally to demand the accused in the August 21 grenade attack case be hanged.

Upazila Nirbahi Office (UNO) Joton Chand imposed Section 144, from 8 am on Thursday, to prevent any untoward incident.

UNO, Joton Chand told the Dhaka Tribune: “Two groups of Awami League-organized meetings were scheduled on the same day at the same time. Until the situation normalizes, the ban will continue—to avoid chaos.”

Gopalpur Thana Officer-in-Charge Hasan Al Mamun said: “Additional members of the police were deployed to maintain law and order.”

Following this incident, during a press conference at the Tangail Press Club, on Thursday afternoon, Yunus Islam Talukder said: “Following several changes, the rally was organized after it approved by the administration. Even so, they imposed Section 144 without further investigating the matter.”

“There will be a rally in the afternoon, outside of the area prohibited by Section 144, in Shakharia.” He added.
