Akifa passed away around 4:45am on Thursday
One-year-old Akifa was propelled from her mother’s arms when a bus hit them; she has died following two days of treatment at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).
Akifa's father, Harun ar Rashid, has confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune that she passed away around 4:45am on Thursday.
He said that his daughter is a victim of reckless driving.
The accident took place Tuesday morning near Chourhash Mor,Kushtia . That morning, Akifa's mother, Rina Begum, walked down the road, past a stationary bus named Ganjeraaj. She was carrying her one-year-old daughter Akifa.
The bus suddenly hit them from behind and Akifa was seriously injured after being thrust from her mother's arms.
After that, the locals rescued the two and brought them to Kushtia General Hospital. The doctors referred Akifa to DMCH as her condition was deteriorating.
Meanwhile, the incident caused an uproar when a video it went viral on Facebook. The footage clearly shows that the driver of the Ganjeraaj bus (Dhaka-Metro-Ga-14-0177) hit the mother-daughter and fled the scene.
CCTV footage of the incident, provided by the Kushtia district police, depicts reckless driving.
Following the incident, a human chain was formed at Chourhash Mor around 11am on Wednesday. A few thousand local citizens and students participated in the event.
They demanded that the Ganjeraaj bus driver be arrested and punished.
