Eleven people killed in road accidents across Bangladesh


Several others also left injured by the accidents in four districts

At least 11 people have been killed and several others injured in separate road accidents across Bangladesh.

The incidents took place in Comilla, Khagrachhari, Barguna, Narsingdi, Gopalganj, Gazipur, and Sylhet districts, on Tuesday.

In Comilla, a man and his four-year-old son were killed after the CNG auto-rickshaw they were on, lost control and crashed into a roadside tree in the Palpara area of Sadar upazila in the early hours.

Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC), Abu Salam Mia, said two others, the man's wife and daughter, were also injured in the accident and were admitted to Comilla Medical College Hospital.

He said they impounded the auto-rickshaw, but the driver managed to flee the scene.

Also, a 14-year-old schoolboy was killed after a truck lost control and crashed into a roadside shop on the Comilla-Sylhet regional highway in the district’s Debidwar municipality area around 2pm, Tuesday.

Debidwar police said they detained the truck driver and his assistant after the incident, and impounded the vehicle too.

In Barguna, two motorcyclists were killed and another critically injured when a bus ran over them on the Barguna-Betagi Road in the Kazir Haat area around 1pm.

Betagi police OC, Mamun-ur-Rashid, said the bodies were sent to Barguna General Hospital morgue for autopsies, and the injured were sent to Barisal Sher-E-Bangla Medical College for treatment.

He added that they impounded the bus and also detained its driver.

In Khagrachhari, a motorcyclist was killed after his two-wheeler collided head-on with a bus on the Chittagong-Khagrachhari Road in Guimara's Buddhongpara, Tuesday morning.

Guimara police OC, Gias Uddin, said they impounded the Shyamoli Paribahan bus, but the driver managed to escape.

In Narsingdi, two people died on the spot after a head-on collision between a bus and a pickup in the Panchdona Bazar area on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in the early hours.

Panchdona police outpost In-Charge Yusuf Ali said both deceased were on the pickup – one of them was the driver and the other a vegetable trader.

He said both vehicles were later impounded.

In Gopalganj, a motorcycle rider was killed on the spot after a passenger bus ran over the two-wheeler on the Dhaka-Khulna Highway in the Bijoypasha area of Sadar upazila in the afternoon.

Sadar police OC, Monirul Islam, said the body was sent to Gopalganj General Hospital morgue for autopsy.

In Gazipur, a vegetable trader was killed on the spot after a pickup rear-ended a truck parked on the side of the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in the Salna area around 11am.

Naojore highway police outpost In-Charge, Inspector Ohiduzzaman, said the pickup driver managed to escape right after the accident, while they impounded both vehicles.

In Sylhet, a man was killed on the spot after being run over by a Dhaka-bound bus on the Sylhet-Dhaka Highway in Dakkhin Sumra’s Lalabazar area around 11am, Tuesday.

Police said they impounded the bus but its driver managed to escape.

Locals blockaded the highway for several hours and vandalized a number of vehicles, protesting the road accidents that killed four people in the last 15 days in the Lalabazar area.
