On Monday, the team visited the Swarnibhar Bazar area
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) investigation team has visited the scene in Khagrachhari where seven murders took place.
The team, on Monday, visited the Swarnibhar Bazar area where the shootings took place. They spoke with United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) members, and family members of the victims, in the presence of high-level officials of the administration.
The NHRC investigation teams include members Nurun Nahar Osmani as the convenor, NHRC Deputy Director M Rabiul Islam, and member Banchita Chakma.
NHRC members Nahar said the team will gather information from the field and will submit it to the commission chairman.
District administration investigation committee Convenor and Additional Magistrate Abu Yousuf, UNO Shamsul Tabriz were present with the NHRC team.
At the time, on behalf of UPDF, a four-point written demand was submitted to the team.
Pahari Chharta Parishad Generak Secretary Amal Chakma said: “The investigation committee formed to look into the Swaribhar massacre should be replaced with a judicial probe; the JSS [Jana Sanghati Samity] members involved in the massacre should be brought to trial and prosecuted, law enforcement officials who failed to stop the crime should be held accountable, and extremist JSS members should no-longer be given assistance.”
The NHRC team also met with the Khagrachhari Zilla Parishad Chairman Kangjori Chowdhury.
On August 18, seven men, including a pedestrian, were killed – and three others injured – when assailants opened fire on a rally that gathered in the Swarnibhar Bazar.
