Saiful Islam, 32, was hacked to death around 10:30pm on Saturday
Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the murder of a member of Bangladesh’s military—in Bongkira village under sadar upazila of Jhenaidah district.
Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, Jhenaidah Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge said: “The duo – Mizanur Rahman and Akimul Islam – was arrested in a night-long raid—conducted in Dakbangla area of the Sadar upazila and Badarganj area of Chuadanga respectively.
“The murder weapon, a machete, was also seized during the raid.”
Saiful Islam, 32, was hacked to death around 10:30pm on Saturday. The victim’s father, Habibur Rahman filed a case against five or six unnamed suspects in Jhenaidah Sadar police station the same night.
The 32-year-old was assigned to the Ghatail Cantonment Medical Corps in Tangail.
The deceased’s brother, Monirul Islam, told the Dhaka Tribune: “My brother and I were returning from his [Saiful] in-law’s house in Badarganj on a motorcycle around 10:30pm.
“A group of robbers placed a tree on Haonghata road to block our way. We tried to escape but the robbers caught us and hacked my brother mercilessly.”
Saiful was declared dead when taken to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital in critical condition.
Jhenaidah Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Emdadul Hoque Sheikh said: “We are trying to determine whether he was murdered because of enmity or robbery alone.”
