A youth who was beaten up in Rajshahi for protesting against drug abuse died from his injuries on Friday.

Abdur Razzak, the 30-year-old son of Islam of HazraPukur area in the city, had already given police the names of the eight youths who he said attacked him with metal pipes and rods on August 6.

Chandrima police station OC Humayun Kabir said: “Razzak already mentioned us the names of eight men who tortured him. We are in the process of arresting the culprits and a case was already filed regarding this matter.”

Razzak’s brother, Shahin, said the eight were known drug addicts who regularly hold drug sniffing arrangements in the local area.

“They killed Razzak as he told them that he would inform Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) about their arrangements,” Shahin said.

On the day of the attack, Shahin said the addicts picked up Razzak from his house under the pretence of going for tea.

“They severely beat Razzak with GI pipes and rods and left him at the HazraPukur area,” Shahin said.

A police patrol recovered Razzak and admitted him to Ward 8 of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), where he died on Friday morning while undergoing treatment.
